Building a simple, easy to use in-home network

iChat instant messaging (IM) is a feature available on all new Macintosh’s. You can set up a simple IM network and even video chat with one another. Additionally, other services, like Skype™ allow you to use your Mac like an internet telephone.

Communicating

Entertainment

Networking allows you to share resources among your computers. You can move files from one Mac to another, communicate via iChat, store files on a shared hard drive and share printers. Here are some of the options you might want to consider for your own in-home network:

If you have several Macintosh computers in your home, it may make sense to share more than just an internet connection. You can share printers, networked hard drives, transfer and share files or accounts on the same computer.

Sharing resources

Your Macintosh can also be set up and used as a home entertainment system. You can attach it to a large screen, flat panel, HiDef monitor, or stream music, photos and movies to an AppleTV.  Other products allow you to watch television directly on your Macintosh.

Websites

If you want to set up your own, personal website, start a blog, or post photos to share with friends and family, you can take advantage of the tools that come with your Mac and iLife. I can demonstrate iWeb, the software I use to create and maintain all of my websites, and show you how easy and beneficial a MobileMe account is.
